Frank W. Keyser was born November 12, 1907 in New York City. He moved to Athens with his family in 1921. Frank joined the Merchants Marines where he served as a Second Mate and later went on to become a certified Captain before being discharged and getting married.
Frank was a cabinet maker and wood sculptor with shops in both Athens and New York City. He was a respected artist. Frank also taught basic cabinet making in his later years for Columbia-Green Community College. Frank was predeceased by this wife Vera in 1972; they had no children.
In 1975, Frank and a small handful of volunteers organized the first Athens Street Festival which was a huge success. Frank worked year round to make the festival an annual event in our community. These events became larger and more popular with each passing year.
This year we are holding the 43rd Annual Street Festival. Frank passed away on April 25,1987, but his ideas, hard work and enthusiasm still remain with us. His love for this community and his wishes to have a special day put aside for the enjoyment of all families have inspired our Street Festival Committee to continue to carry on Frank's work.
